Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione’s Past President and Partner, Roy Hofer, Opens New Firm

Wednesday, October 9, 2013

Roy E. Hofer, formerly of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, announces the opening of his new firm, Law Offices of Roy E. Hofer. Hofer will provide mediation, arbitration, special master and early neutral evaluator services in intellectual property cases. In addition, he will counsel clients involved in district court and appellate IP litigation.

“This next phase of my career provides me an opportunity to apply my 50-plus years of experience as an IP litigator while focusing on the alternative dispute resolution practice that I have come to appreciate as an integral part of complex IP matters,” said Hofer.

Before receiving his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1961, Hofer served as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office then as a patent agent at Exxon Corporation. In 1961, Hofer joined the predecessor to Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione and was a partner for more than 50 years. He obtained the largest jury award in the firm’s history, a $102 million verdict in a patent infringement litigation related to plastic films for packaging meats.

In recent years, Hofer has dedicated much of his time to serving as mediator, arbitrator or special master in IP matters.

Hofer is a frequent writer and speaker on IP issues. He is a former president of the Chicago Bar Association, the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the Center for Conflict Resolution and the Brinks Hofer firm. Hofer is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Chicago America Inn of Court, the Richard Linn American Inn of Court, the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, the Lawyers Club of Chicago and the Union League Club of Chicago.

Hofer has been recognized annually among Best Lawyers in America for 22 years and was recently named as Litigation – Intellectual Property Lawyer of the Year for Chicago in 2014. He was also named as Patent Law Lawyer of the Year for Chicago in 2012 and as Intellectual Property Lawyer of the Year for Chicago in 2011. He has been ranked by Chambers USA as a Leading Illinois Intellectual Property Lawyer for 10 years and by Illinois Super Lawyers as a top attorney in Alternative Dispute Resolution, Intellectual Property Litigation, and is noted by the publication as a Top 100 Attorney.
